Edina: From Farm to City- The Digital Exhibit

A History of Edina and Its Development

Edina’s story is often linked to Southdale Center and the postwar suburban boom—but the community’s roots reach much deeper. Long before Edina became a city, Dakota people lived in relationship with this land and its waterways. In the mid-19th century, settlers built farms, mills, and institutions that reshaped the landscape. Over time, new neighborhoods, commercial districts, and civic systems emerged—bringing both growth and profound change.

Edina: From Farm to City explores how land, water, agriculture, transportation, planning, and community decisions shaped Edina’s development—from early settlement to streetcar suburbs, from the Country Club District to Southdale, and from rapid expansion to modern restoration and sustainability efforts.

This exhibit also holds space for complexity. Edina’s history includes progress and prosperity, but also exclusion and inequity. Understanding the full story helps us better understand the present—and the choices that will shape what comes next.

Edina Landmarks:

A digital tour through historic Edina

Edina Landmarks is a digital tour through three of Edina’s most meaningful historic sites: Edina Mills, Historic Cahill School, and the 1879 Minnehaha Grange Hall. Explore how a water-powered mill helped spark early growth, how a one-room schoolhouse became the heart of a community, and how the Grange Hall served as both gathering place and village hall. Along the way you’ll find historic photographs, artifacts, and stories that bring Edina’s past into focus—right where it happened.

Edina Aqua Nymphs

A History of Women's Synchronized Swimming in Edina

Edina Aqua Nymphs traces the remarkable history of women’s synchronized swimming in Edina—from its early days as “water ballet” to a highly organized, competitive team with statewide recognition. Drawing from scrapbooks, photographs, programs, and firsthand reflections, this digital exhibit explores how generations of young women built a sport through creativity, discipline, leadership, and community. Featuring the voices and records of the swimmers themselves, Edina Aqua Nymphs celebrates athletic achievement, friendship, and the lasting impact of women’s athletics in Edina.
