Join the Edina Historical Society and professional archaeologists from Nienow Cultural Consultants for a hands-on archaeological investigation at the historic Birch Family Fruit Farm site in Edina.
Volunteers will work alongside professional archaeologists and participate in real archaeological fieldwork while helping document an important piece of Edina’s early agricultural history. Activities may include excavation, screening soil, identifying and processing artifacts, documenting finds, and assisting with general archaeological field activities.
No previous archaeological experience is required. Training and supervision will be provided.
Volunteer Requirements
- Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older
- Volunteers must sign a liability waiver prior to participation
- Participation is limited to 3–4 volunteers per workday
- Volunteers should be comfortable working outdoors for extended periods on uneven ground

May 30th (Saturday), 2026
Time: 9:00 AM–4:00 PM
Volunteer opportunities are available during scheduled project workdays.
Please note: Work is weather dependent, and schedules may change due to rain, extreme heat, or other field conditions. Volunteers will be notified of any schedule changes.
Physical Expectations
Archaeological fieldwork can involve:
- Standing or walking for extended periods
- Kneeling or bending
- Light digging and screening soil
- Carrying light buckets or equipment
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
Volunteers are encouraged to participate at a level comfortable for them.
What to Wear
Please wear:
- Closed-toe shoes or boots (required)
- Clothing suitable for outdoor work
- Layers appropriate for changing weather
- Clothes you do not mind getting dusty or dirty
- Hat and sunglasses (recommended)
What to Bring
Please bring:
- Lunch
- Water
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Any medications you may need during the day
- Filled out and signed waiver
Additional Information
- Restroom information and parking instructions will be provided prior to your volunteer date.
- No pets, alcohol, or recreational drugs are permitted on site.
- Volunteers may be photographed for educational and promotional purposes associated with the project.
