The Peterson Family: Through the Years
The Peterson Family is a perfect fit for Edina Historical Society’s first fundraiser concert on June 14. Not only is the group expected to bring in a full house, the Petersons are history-makers in the music business.
“Because this is a fundraiser, our top consideration is selling a lot of tickets,” said concert chairman Frank McGoldrick. “But as a history organization, we also like that the Petersons are a local family that has made history.” WCCO career, Twins organist, piano legend
Matriarch Jeanne Arland Peterson has been inducted in both the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame and the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting Hall of Fame for her amazing vocal and piano talents.
A child prodigy at the piano, Jeanne landed a job with the largest radio station in the Twin Cities, WCCO, while she was still in high school. For 22 years, she was staff vocalist and pianist. She married Willie Peterson, another talented musician, who led the WCCO house band. He later was organist for the Minnesota Twins, and Jeanne took over his duties when he died of cancer in 1969. The couple raised five children in Richfield. Not surprisingly, between good genetics and a musical environment, all five Peterson children showed remarkable talents of their own. While they each have successful solo careers, they often perform together as the Peterson Family, dubbed “Minnesota’s First Family of Music.”
Patty Peterson, who now lives in Edina with her family, has seven Minnesota Music Awards to her credit. A jazz vocalist, Patty has three solo CDs and performs throughout the country and has appeared with such musical luminaries as David Sanborn, Steve Miller, Donny Osmond and others. Patty is also a radio personality in the Twin Cities, hosting shows at KBEM radio.
Linda Peterson, who now lives in California, will fly in for the concert. A pianist, vocalist and songwriter, Linda is internationally known for her original jazz composition “Too Late to Leave Early.” She performs both in the United States and abroad.
Paul Peterson was discovered at age 17 by the legendary artist Prince and was featured in the film Purple Rain. A multi-instrumentalist, he is in demand as a studio musician for Johnny Lang, Kenny Loggins and Paula Abdul, to name a few. When he isn’t touring with Oleta Adams and his newest band fDeluxe, he lives in Edina with his family and teaches at Minneapolis Media.
Billy Peterson, who toured with the Steve Miller band for 23 years and is an award-winning jazz producer, joins the family for the performance. He and brother Ricky are owners of the premier jazz club The Artists Quarter in St. Paul.
Jason Peterson De Laire (left) is the first of Jeanne’s grandchildren to join the professional ranks. A gifted pianist/writer/saxophonist/vocalist, he has worked with the likes of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Prince and Donny Osmond, among others.
Grandson Isaac Peterson Johnson, an Edina High School graduate and talented drummer, is another among the third generation to perform with the family. Other current and former Edina High School students in the third generation may also perform. The fundraiser will support the Edina Historical Society, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed in 1969 to collect, preserve and tell the history of Edina, Minnesota. The Society operates the Edina History Museum, 4711 West 70th Street, as well as living history programs at two of Edina’s oldest buildings, Cahill School and Minnehaha Grange Hall No. 398 at Tupa Park. The Society’s operating budget is funded through memberships, community donations, support from the City of Edina, and field trip income.
